Guitar Building Print E-mail

"My experience was very fulfilling, and zen-like! First class tuition and support. If I could take the time out I would do the course again." --Jon Pinsky

In this course everyone builds a straight-ahead, high-quality guitar with special attention paid to the most important aspects of the instrument: craftsmanship, tonal quality, playability, and strong design. With enrollment limited to five, we provide a great deal of personal attention. Students work daily in tandem with the instructor George Morris, a thirty-year veteran of the craft. George builds an instrument along with everyone else during the course, as a way to demonstrate each procedure. Students receive an illustrated shop manual detailing the day-by-day, blow-by-blow account of each task, along with supportive technical and theoretical information. It is designed for course use and future reference. Graduates can join our online forum and always have access to the latest manual, and all other alumni with whom to share information.

We follow the hand-building tradition, not the factory model, and strive to promote the craft by incorporating useful modern techniques with traditional wisdom. Students learn general woodworking skills such as the use and sharpening of chisels and planes, routers and saws, and also guitar-specific skills special to the craft. The course is tailored to do two things: produce a very fine instrument and, more importantly, prepare students to continue their own work as soon as possible without having to invest in expensive equipment.

Students are encouraged to use our extensive library of books, journals, magazines, and videos while they are here to deepen their knowledge of the craft. Tuition is $3800 and includes all materials and supplies, and free on-site housing with two fully-equipped kitchens. Guitar cases, pick-ups, and other accessories can be purchased from the school at below market prices. We supply on-going technical support for all graduates, including access to our blog site, exclusive to Vermont Instrument graduates, to use as a forum to talk about all things guitar. Students will have access to the latest things we have been working on, ask questions of the school or fellow students, start discussions about building issues, or just keep in touch and show everyone what they are up to.

We do not require woodworking experience per se, BUT a facility with one’s hands, and the ability to spend long hours in the shop is expected.

FREE HOUSING and FREE MATERIALS

Kitchen equipment, bedding, and all the materials and supplies for the instruments are provided. You need only bring food money, and personal items. There is no cell phone service here, but there is a phone available to students, 802-727-4311. WiFi is available in both buildings so computers are welcome.

There are two separate living quarters, each essentially an apartment for three, with some private and some semi-private rooms to choose from. Each apartment has its own bath and kitchen and they are right here on campus. A general store and post office is less than a mile away, and a Laundromat nearby.
